Fabian Bergmark Näsman’s sculptures twist and twine in poses reminiscent of sci-fi plants, almost inviting interaction. His works feel like they could be conquered like fitness equipment or explored like playground structures. The aesthetic, with its chromed mechanical biology and futuristic color palette borrowed from nature, is highly appealing. Fabian has observed the emotionalization of everyday objects, a driver of consumerism since the late 90s.
Rooted in ideas of recursion and hybridization, Fabian (b. 1991, SE) has developed a unique artistic process. He casts sculptures from a single mold but creates an original piece each time through dissection and reconstruction. These abstract works serve as explorations of formal and academic questions. Bergmark Näsman’s sculptures oscillate between the natural and the unnatural, challenging perception based on context.
For SCOPES, Fabian presents an installation that fuses his signature sculptural work with the Porsche Taycan, covering the car’s body with armor-like thorns. These protrusions, finished in a matching silver hue, seem to merge with the car itself. The organic forms are part of Fabian’s ongoing sculptural series, Figure, which he has been exclusively developing in recent years.
Fabian is fascinated by thorns, spines, horns, and prickles, as they set boundaries for how one should approach the objects they adorn. The rose thorn, for instance, serves to physically deter animals from consuming the flower. When such notions enter popular culture, particularly in fashion, they become statements rather than purely functional features. Fabian’s thorns, though, are never sharp or dangerous; they are smooth and round—almost inviting touch.
Fabian Bergmark Näsman studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and Konstfack in Stockholm. He has exhibited internationally and recently completed his first public sculpture in Stockholm.
